Where: Cheney School Cheney Lane Headington Oxford OX3 7QH (with additional tables at Temple Cowley United Reformed Church OX4 2ES if needed)

Cost: £3

PRE-REGISTRATION ESSENTIAL: Register in advance by 1 pm on the 19th December Book online (£3 + 40p processing fee) or email stating full name, current playing standard (see below) and Table Tennis England membership number. (If you don’t have current TTE membership, take out free Associate membership.)

General information

The format is similar to the All-Comers Ping! Oxford Summer League, but on only one evening. Open to players of all standards and ages from 11+ (under-16s accompanied by an adult, under 11s at the discretion of the organisers).

When registering, please state which category you are:

  • A: Top player, e.g. Oxford Division 1 standard and above
  • B: Good league–standard player, e.g. Oxford Div 2 or top half Div 3
  • C: Lower league-standard player e.g. Oxford lower Div 3 or Development League
  • D: Competitive social player e.g. workplace ladder, holiday competitions
  • E: Occasional social player

Play will be in groups of 5 players of a similar standard. Each player plays the others in their group, three games up to 11, no deuces.

“Every point counts!” Final positions in the group will be determined by total points won, not sets. Group winners will receive a medal, a certificate, and a fantastic Decathlon Rollnet, for instant table tennis on any kind of table.

The competition is run by the Oxford and District Table Tennis Association (ODTTA) with support from Table Tennis England and Oxford City Council Ping! Oxford. An organiser with DBS clearance will be in overall charge on the night, and there will be at least one person present with up-to-date first aid training.

The organisers reserve the right to change the format to accommodate the number of entries to ensure all players get a good level of play.

Is there parking?

Cheney school has plenty of bike racks and free parking spaces. Several buses stop nearby.

There is also free parking at Temple Cowley United Reformed Church if groups play there.

Can I just turn up and play?

You must register by 1 pm on the 19th December in order to play. Numbers are limited to 30 players at Cheney. We will use additional tables at Temple Cowley United Reformed Church OX4 2ES if numbers are high. (We will tell you in good time if your group is playing there instead of at Cheney.)

What group will I be in?

The organisers will place players in the appropriate group for their level of play, based on the information available (including league form and previous summer league results).

I don’t have my own bat, is equipment provided?

Yes, we provide balls, and bats for those who don’t have their own. The top group(s) will play on good ITTF standard tables using 3* 40+ balls.

Does it matter what I wear?

Whatever you want and usually wear to play, whether that’s full sports kit or ordinary clothes. But do wear trainers or similar and avoid wearing white tops as this makes the ball hard to see.

Does it matter if I can’t serve properly?

Players in the higher level groups should follow normal service rules. Service rules in the lower level groups will be more relaxed to accommodate inexperienced and social players, but we can advise you how to serve properly.

I’m a beginner, is this competition for me?

As long as you can knock the ball over the net fairly reliably, you can give it a go, as you will be in a group with players of a similar level.

I’m a pretty good player, is this competition for me?

Yes, we’ll put you in a group with players of a similar standard. Some of them could be top players who don’t play in our local leagues, so you can enjoy a new challenge!
